Each note exists because the rule changes. A town with no extra rule is not listed.
The job on every note is the same: remove a dangerous tree.
- Mecklenburg heritage trees
Inside Charlotte city limits a native trunk at least 30 inches at 4.5 feet is a heritage tree, and a true hazard still needs paperwork within three days.
- Triangle hazardous trees
Raleigh’s code names a hazardous tree only when a certified arborist finds a structural defect, a size threshold, a failure potential, and a target.
- Coastal specimen oaks
A live oak, pond cypress, or bald cypress at 36 inches cannot come out of unincorporated New Hanover without a Board of Adjustment variance.
- Mountain slope removals
Above 2,500 feet and a 35 percent slope, Buncombe allows dead or diseased trees out with hand-held tools and bars healthy trunks over 3 inches.
- Triad danger trees
Greensboro defines a danger tree as one that can fall into a utility line. Existing single-family yards sit outside the conservation ordinance.
- Sandhills longleaf pines
Fayetteville exempts southern yellow pine from preservation credit and then excludes longleaf. A healthy 30-inch longleaf on a development site is a specimen tree.
